Royal Tunbridge Wells Monson Swimming Club (RTWM) is the most prestigious and successful swimming club in rural Kent boasting five Olympians and many International representatives as well as County; Regional and National Champions since its formation in 1901. The swimming squad membership ranges from 10 years of age to 19 years and caters for all levels of aspiration including swimmers with a disability. RTWM prides itself on its ability to develop home grown talent through its Academy Swim Programme.
Please look at our Squads page for details of the various squads on offer at Monson. Once you have identified the group most relevant to you please contact the relevant person detailed below. You will be invited for a try-out session so that the coach can evaluate your skill level and determine which squad would be most suitable for you to join. If no places are available at that time you will be placed on a waiting list and notified when we are able to offer you a place.

Monson Swimming Academy
The 'Monson Swim Academy' is based on well established Long Term Athlete Development and child development principles and focuses on a multi-skill approach to movement literacy, bridging the gap between Learn to Swim and Competitive swimming. This is achieved utilising a combination of elements of the Kellogg's ASA Award scheme (primarily National Plan for Teaching Swimming evels 5-10).
The age range of members is 6-11 (+ or - 1) years. The skills learnt within the Monson Academy will provide excellent swim skills and movement literacy and ensure that members are well versed in training etiquette and prepared to take full advantage of the advanced training on offer within the RTWM squad system should they wish to pursue competitive swimming to a higher level.
The Academy squads are divided into squads named Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum and swimmers progress through these squads before ultimately moving into the Age Group squad. The number of sessions per week is presently as follows:

Learn to Swim / Academy Swim School
Our Learn to Swim School, or Academy Swim School follows the ASA National Swimming Plan at the swim school, starting at Stage 5. Lessons take place in the diving pit at St Johns and due to the pool depths we cannot offer lower stages. The RTW Monson Swim School runs in parallel with the squad on Monday nights and at the allocated time slots of their stages. Fees will be paid on a term by term basis.
If your child is interested in joining RTW Monson swimming club we welcome them to swim a session with us for assessment. Please email Wendy Dray | [email protected] for further details.
The stages are as follows:
Stage 5
- Developing "watermanship" through sculling, treading water and complete rotations
- Perform ALL strokes to the given standard as directed by the ASA
Stage 6
- Developing effective skills including a co-ordinated breathing
- Developing the water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise
Stage 7
- Developing quality stroke technique for up to 100 metres
- Incorporating skills learnt and combining them to develop a linked routine
- Diving is also taught at this stage
Stage 8
On completion of this stage, the swimmer will be able to:
- Complete a set lasting 400m (16 lengths of a 25 m pool) on a specific turn around time set by the coach
- Swim 400 metres continuously using one stroke
- Perform a selection of turns

After completing Stage 8, the children will be ready to train with the club taking with them 4 robust strokes, and they will be able to dive and tumble turn.

RTW Monson SC do not have a masters section of their own but have a sister club RTW Masters SC which has many ex Monson swimmers and caters exclusively for masters.
